What If We Could Start Over With What We Know Now?

Sometimes I ask myself: If I could live this same life again, but with all the knowledge and experience I have today, would I walk the same path? Maybe you’ve asked yourself the same question. I think it’s a beautiful fantasy; maybe even a little philosophical; that visits us all at some point in life.

The truth is, we only get one chance at life; one shot to make decisions with no real option to go back and try again. But the human mind is always curious. It wants to know what was behind the choices we never made. That’s probably why books and movies about time travel or changing the past are so popular; they touch something deep in us.

The more I think about it, the more I see that reality is not always what we see; it’s what we want to believe. Many times, we create stories in our minds about the past. We ask, “What if I had done that instead?” or “What if I had said no?” And we imagine a better version of today. But who really knows? What if, on that special day, that important meeting, or that big opportunity, we had chosen differently? Maybe something worse would have happened.

Let’s imagine something: you go back ten years, to a day when you signed a big contract. Today, you believe it was the wrong decision. You say, “If I could go back, I would never sign it.” But how can you be sure? Maybe that “wrong” decision saved you from something worse; a bad accident, or a crisis you never saw coming. We never get to see the other version of the story.

So if I ever get the chance to go back, I won’t do it to change my path just to feel better about life. I would do it only for one reason: to satisfy my deep curiosity; to see the other side of life that I never had the chance to explore. Life is like a movie where we only see the final cut. We never get to watch the deleted scenes. Maybe that’s what makes it so magical.

This thought also reminds me of my personal and professional journey; from moving out of Iran to living in Georgia and later Spain, building businesses that sometimes succeeded and sometimes failed, and going through personal crises that shaped who I am today. Every experience, every challenge, and every success added a new piece to who I have become. And maybe that’s why I feel more curious than ever about the hidden sides of the decisions I’ve made.

What about you? If you had one more chance, would you take it? Would you walk a different road; or simply try to see the scenes you missed the first time?
